Billy Graham
Salvation literally means “to be rescued and delivered from what was intended to destroy us and leave us dejected”. God, by sending His Son - Jesus Christ, to die on the cross and make a once and for all sacrifice in order to rescue us from our sins and the consequences of sin (shame, guilt, brokenness, death, and eternal separation from God), He offers us the gift of Salvation. This occurred so that God may accept Jesus’ sacrifice in our place, forgive us for our sins, remove our shame, and provide a way for us to live a full life, both now and eternally in heaven.
The gospel is the ‘good news’. In fact, it is so good that it is almost unbelievable. But we can only truly appreciate the goodness of the gospel if we understand the reality of life without Jesus. It’s critical that we first know the bad news so that we might realise just how good the good news really is.
Every single one of us on the face of the earth, walking around our cities, and even sitting in our churches are all sinners who deserve God’s anger. Although physically alive, many of us are spiritually dead because of sin, and ultimately, heading to an eternity where we will be separated from God. As people, we are completely broken, and we need His saving grace – His Salvation, as there is no way we can earn our way into God’s favor.
The entire Bible is basically the story of God’s mission to rescue and redeem all of humanity from sin and restore us into a right relationship with Him, because of His great love for us, and His desire for each of us to be with Him. This is the reason why He sent His Son – Jesus.
Jesus is both God and human. He came into the world, fulfilled the law completely, lived without sin, and died in our place. He lived a righteous (perfect and blameless) life before making the once and for all sacrifice to take on the world's sins and the punishment for those sins. He then rose from the dead, showing that He was victorious over sin and the consequences of sin, conquering the very thing that was supposed to be permanent: death. Then, in His grace, Jesus offered Salvation to us all.
When we believe in Jesus by faith and accept Him as our Lord and Savior, God accepts Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf and sees us as righteous and perfect because Jesus paid the debt we owed. We can have a relationship with God, turn away from sin, live life empowered by the Holy Spirit, and ultimately spend eternity in heaven with God because of Jesus’ gift of love and Salvation.
